Sotheby’s International Realty has released its top sales for September 2013. A $44 million-dollar transaction for a 504-acre property in Snowmass Village, Colo., topped the list. The 23,000-square-foot main house is supplemented by a guest house, barn, two ponds with water rights and breathtaking views all around. The barn includes five stalls and a riding arena. If being in the saddle triggers achy muscles, the home includes a massage room and a spa with a sunken hot tub. A complete retreat, as it should be with that price tag.

A newly built, 15,500-square-foot estate home on the south side of Belvedere Island facing San Francisco Bay was the runner up. The sale price was not disclosed, though it was at least $24 million, the price tag on the third highest sale in September. That property, a private, 167-acre island in the Exuma Cays in the Bahamas, includes its own marina, heliport, seaplane ramp and “natural” roadways. Two main residences grace a hilltop. Ah, the price of a private paradise.
