A Client’s Collection Goes Up for Auction

Select sales at Sotheby’s auction house go forward despite COVID-19 thanks to online catalogs and bidding. We were reminded of that in a very direct way today when we received a catalog link from Carolyn Nagy, vice president and head of office for Sotheby’s Philadelphia region, featuring selected silver, furnishings and ceramics from the collection of

Silver punch bowl from Germany
At 21″ wide, this c. 1900 punch bowl is quite the centerpiece for a party. It will auctioned on April 22, 2020, beginning at 10:00 a.m. via online and phone bidding, at Sotheby’s auction house.

the late Andrew Hartnagle. Mr. Hartnagle was an interior decorator and designer working in the greater Philadelphia region. A selected group of silver, furniture and ceramics from his extensive holdings will be sold by Sotheby’s on April 22, 2020, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

His own home, Twin Silo, a spectacular 90-acre farm estate just outside Doylestown, Bucks County, is also featured in the auction catalog as it is presently listed for sale by Kurfiss Sotheby’s International Realty. Linda Danese and Chris Preston from the company’s New Hope office are representing the property. Mr. Hartnagle took great care with the design and furnishings in every room of his home. He also applied his talents to the grounds by creating an outstanding series of outdoor “rooms” showcasing English, French and Italian influences.

tennis court. Mr. Hartnagle was the visionary who took a proper Bucks County stone house and turned it into a true retreat. He enjoyed entertaining there, and the property has hosted events for hundreds with ease.

Twin Silo at night
The property is magical at night. A substantial pond is complete with a pair of swans.

The land rolls out in a fairly level manner, and the acreage is not in conservation, so a buyer could potentially create an enclave there, perhaps a family compound or perhaps a group of higher-end properties. It is approximately one hour from Philadelphia and 90 minutes into Manhattan. Closer to Twin Silo are the charming historical villages of Carversville and Lumberville; New Hope, Pa., and Lambertville, N.J., twin cities on the Delaware River, are about 15 minutes away, as is the Bucks County seat, Doylestown, Pa. While we cannot conduct private tours of Twin Silo at this time due to the COVID-19 shutdown, we invite you to reach out to the listing agents to learn more about the property.
